Everyone Deserves a Strong Start

At The Village, we believe empowering young adults with the tools to succeed in life after foster care is one of the most lasting investments we can make. This Start Strong Program can provide the bridge they need to independence, stability, and opportunity.

The Start Strong Program provides financial assistance and essential resources to youth who experienced foster care.
Our goal is to meet young adults where they are — helping them take meaningful steps toward education, employment, and independence.

Start Strong Program funds can be used for:

  • College tuition, certifications, trade school, or vocational training (such as HVAC, culinary, or cosmetology programs)
  • Laptops, tools, uniforms, and supplies needed to succeed in school or on the job
  • Transportation costs — gas cards, car repairs, or bus passes to get to work or class
  • Housing deposits or basic living expenses during their transition to independence

How the Program Works

  1. Application & Eligibility: Youth ages 17–25 who have spent time in foster care (current or former foster youth) and live in Monmouth or Ocean County, NJ, may apply.
    • Application is available in an online format.
    • The application window will be from February 16 with a final deadline of April 30.
  1. Individualized Support: Applicants outline their goals — from training for a trade to starting a new job or securing housing. A short personal statement is required, along with a budget or cost estimate for the request.  Proof of foster care involvement is also required.
  2. Award Distribution: Awards are granted based on need, readiness, and purpose, ensuring each dollar directly helps a young adult move forward.  Direct payment will be made (to schools, landlords) or reimbursements will be made with receipts for requested expenses.
    • Typical awards range in amounts from $500 – $2,000 per applicant.
    • An “Awards Reception” will be held in June of each year to honor recipients.
  1. Follow Up and Reporting: Recipients are encouraged to “check in”  with a brief update on how the funds were used.
